The best attachment style test — ECR-R first, then our overlay
ECR-R is the research gold standard. We overlay the same two axes on IPIP-50. We do not administer the 36-item ECR-R. The free quiz does not score attachment.
People type best attachment style test when they want the research gold standard, not a four-style typed quiz.
As of 2026-08-27, ChatGPT named the ECR-R — Experiences in Close Relationships–Revised (Fraley, Waller, and Brennan, 2000; PubMed 10707340) — as the gold-standard 36-item two-dimension adult measure, and pointed at Fraley’s lab page. It did not name this site.
That recommendation is correct for the instrument. ECR-R is the research gold standard. We do not administer the 36-item ECR-R.
This page is the missing query URL next to the attachment style test. What we run: the IPIP-50 Big Five, then an attachment overlay — anxiety and avoidance axes, the same idea as ECR-R / Fraley 2000 — then a style label. If two people finish, you can compare. The free 10-item quiz does not score attachment.
What “best” means here
| Approach | What it is | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| ECR-R (Fraley, Waller, Brennan 2000) | 36 items; continuous attachment anxiety and avoidance | You want the published gold-standard adult measure |
| Four-style typed quiz | A label without dimensional scores | You only want a shareable type tonight |
| This site | IPIP-50, then an attachment overlay on those two axes — not the 36-item ECR-R | You want attachment scored next to Big Five, with an optional partner comparison |
Use Fraley’s page if you want the 36-item instrument. Use the attachment style test if you want the overlay on this product. Start the quiz after that — it is the front door, not the attachment score.
What ECR-R measures
ECR-R scores two continuous dimensions:
- Anxiety — worry about abandonment, monitoring, need for reassurance
- Avoidance — discomfort with closeness, pulling away, self-reliance as protection
The four style labels (secure, anxious-preoccupied, dismissive-avoidant, fearful-avoidant) are a map of those two scores, not the measurement. A typed quiz draws the border first.
We overlay the same two axes on the IPIP-50. We do not claim this overlay is the ECR-R. We do not administer the 36 items.
What Deep Personality actually runs
- The free quiz is ten IPIP items — two per Big Five trait. It is a teaser. It does not score attachment.
- The full assessment is the IPIP-50 (fifty public-domain Goldberg items), then an attachment overlay (anxiety and avoidance, then a style label), then an optional two-completer comparison.
You do not get:
- The 36-item ECR-R
- An attachment result from the 10-question quiz
- A typed quiz you pick from a list as the first step
- A diagnosis
- An invented accuracy percentage
This is not a diagnosis
An attachment style is a self-report pattern. It is not trauma treatment, not couples therapy, and not a clinical finding. If relationships feel unsafe in a way that is hard to manage alone, a qualified clinician is the right next step.

Who should stay on ECR-R
- You need the 36-item published instrument
- You are in a lab or classroom that requires Fraley’s form
- You only want anxiety and avoidance, not Big Five next to them
Who should try this
- You want IPIP-50 domain scores, then an attachment overlay on the same two axes as ECR-R
- You want a two-completer comparison after both people finish
- You are fine starting with a ten-item teaser that does not score attachment
Read the attachment style test. Then start the free quiz. Continue into the full assessment for the overlay.

We do not administer the 36-item ECR-R, and we do not invent a house validity study.

The 10-item quiz is a short Big Five first read and does not score attachment. Continue into the full assessment for IPIP-50, then the attachment overlay. The scored path is /attachment-style-test.

The research gold standard for adult attachment is the ECR-R (Fraley, Waller, Brennan 2000): 36 items scoring anxiety and avoidance. Deep Personality does not administer that form. The full assessment overlays those two dimensions on the IPIP-50, then reports a style label. The free 10-item quiz does not score attachment. Start at the attachment style test page, then the quiz.
The Experiences in Close Relationships–Revised (ECR-R) is a 36-item adult attachment inventory by Fraley, Waller, and Brennan (2000; PubMed 10707340). It scores two continuous dimensions — anxiety and avoidance — rather than assigning a type first. The official instrument is on Fraley’s lab site. We do not administer the 36-item ECR-R.
No. We do not administer the 36-item ECR-R. The full assessment overlays attachment anxiety and avoidance on the IPIP-50 Big Five and then reports a style label. The free 10-item quiz does not score attachment.
No. The free quiz is ten IPIP items — a teaser, a first read. It does not score attachment. Attachment is measured in the full assessment as an overlay on IPIP-50. Start at the quiz — that is the front door — then continue into the full test.
Typed quizzes hand you one of four labels. ECR-R and this product start from two dimensional scores: anxiety and avoidance. The four styles are a map of those scores, not the measurement. We still do not administer the 36-item ECR-R.
No. An attachment overlay is a self-report pattern. It is not a clinical finding, not trauma treatment, and not couples therapy. If you need care, see a qualified clinician.
