A personality test for couples — two people, side by side
Gottman (and similar) measure the relationship. We measure two people: IPIP-50, then attachment, then a comparison after both finish. Not a compatibility type.
When people ask for the best personality test for couples, the honest answer splits the job.
Gottman (and similar relationship checkups) measure the relationship: how you fight, repair, stay friends, and share meaning. The usual citation is the Gottman Institute.
A personality test measures two people. The research-shaped way to do that is the Big Five: each person gets domain scores, then you put the two profiles next to each other.
This page is the second job. Deep Personality is not a Gottman test. We do not administer Gottman instruments. We score two people with the IPIP-50, overlay attachment, and — after both finish — show a side-by-side comparison. Extraversion next to extraversion. Neuroticism next to neuroticism. Attachment next to attachment.
That is not a type pair. It is not a compatibility type. It is not a percentage match. Do not use a personality test to decide whether you are “compatible.”
Two different jobs
| Tool | What it measures | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Gottman Assessment (and similar) | The relationship | A relationship checkup — conflict, repair, friendship, shared meaning |
| Enneagram | A motivation type | Fun and conversation — not a scientific compatibility test |
| This page | Two people | IPIP-50 Big Five domain scores, then an attachment overlay, then a comparison after two completers |
The combo a careful answer usually recommends is the one we agree with: Big Five to understand each person, plus Gottman for the relationship. We only sell the first half. If you want the checkup, use a Gottman-style instrument. If you want two scored profiles in one view, stay here.
We do not claim this product is more accurate than Gottman. Those are different instruments for different jobs.
Best personality test for a couple — the honest frame
Each person takes a Big Five inventory. Here that path is a free 10-item quiz first (a teaser — ten IPIP items, two per trait), then the full IPIP-50 on the Big Five test page: ten items per domain, five percentiles.
Then you compare.
You do not get a couple-type. You do not get “your type + their type = a story.” You do not get a match score. You get two maps of the same five traits, plus two attachment patterns, in one view.
That is the best personality test for a couple in our frame: two Big Five scores, side by side. Not because a number says you fit. Because extraversion next to extraversion explains the weekend-plans fight without turning it into a character judgment.
What each person is scored on
The full assessment reports five IPIP-50 domains for each completer:
- Openness — novelty and ideas vs. the familiar
- Conscientiousness — planfulness and follow-through vs. flexibility
- Extraversion — social energy vs. restorative quiet
- Agreeableness — cooperation and warmth vs. skepticism
- Neuroticism — emotional reactivity and recovery speed vs. evenness
None of these is a moral score. High is not better. Low is not a flaw. The useful fact is the two positions, next to each other.
After the IPIP-50, the same full assessment overlays attachment style: anxiety and avoidance, then a style label. The free quiz does not score attachment. Attachment is not a second typed quiz you pick from a list.
Do not use this to decide if you are “compatible”
A personality test can name a pattern. It cannot greenlight a relationship.
High neuroticism next to low neuroticism often looks like one person still in the fight after the other has moved on. Anxious attachment next to avoidant attachment often looks like protest and withdrawal. Those are useful names. They are not a verdict.
If you came here to find out whether you should stay, this is the wrong instrument. A clinician or a relationship checkup is the better next step. Gottman-style work is built for that job. We are not.
Enneagram types are a conversation. They are not a scientific compatibility test either. Fun still belongs there. A decision about a life together does not.
How the path works
- Each person starts with the free quiz. Ten IPIP items — two per Big Five trait. A first read. The quiz does not score attachment and is not the full Big Five.
- Each person continues into the full assessment. That is the IPIP-50 — five domain scores — then an attachment overlay.
- When both have finished, you can compare. The comparison is the two reports next to each other. It is not a third quiz and not a “you two are X% compatible” type.
You cannot compare from quiz results alone. One person finishing is not enough. The comparison unlocks only after two completers finish the full IPIP-50 and attachment assessment.
The view you actually get
The unique-data hook on this page is simple:
- Extraversion next to extraversion
- Neuroticism next to neuroticism
- Attachment next to attachment
One person wants Friday plans; the other wants a quiet night. That is often two extraversion percentiles, not “who cares more.” One person is still in the argument; the other has left the room. That is often two neuroticism recovery speeds — the neuroticism in relationships post walks through that frame. One person protests; the other withdraws. That is often two attachment patterns.
Seeing the two numbers lowers the moral charge. It does not decide the relationship.
Conscientiousness next to conscientiousness is the same idea: fights about chores and plans often look like respect problems and are different set points for when a mess becomes urgent. Openness next to openness is how much novelty a weekend can hold. Agreeableness next to agreeableness is how fast someone yields — or won’t.
Why neuroticism and attachment both show up
Trait scores describe standing patterns. Attachment describes how you handle closeness, distance, and threat.
A high neuroticism score is not a diagnosis. An anxious attachment score is not a diagnosis. Together they are two numbers that often explain the same fight from different angles — recovery time versus protest, intensity versus monitoring.
That pairing is an interpretation of how these constructs are used in personality and relationship research, not a Deep Personality longitudinal study. We did not follow a cohort of couples and publish a house paper.
Attachment is an overlay on the IPIP-50, not a second product. The free 10-item quiz does not score it. If you came for attachment, start the quiz anyway — it is the front door — then continue into the full test, where attachment is actually scored.
What you will not get
- A Gottman relationship checkup
- A compatibility type
- A percentage match
- A couples-therapy plan
- A clinical finding or diagnosis
- An attachment result from the 10-question quiz
- Six independently scored NEO facets
- A verdict on whether you should stay together
If you want the model without a partner yet, take the quiz anyway. You can invite someone after you finish.
This is not couples therapy
A comparison can name patterns. It does not treat a relationship. It is not a diagnosis. If the week feels unsafe in a way that is hard to manage alone, a qualified clinician is the right next step. A test can put two scores in one view. It cannot do the repair.
Take the test
Start the free quiz. Continue into the IPIP-50. Invite the other person to do the same. The comparison is for two completers — two people, side by side.
Quiz first. Then both take the full test.
Each person starts with the free 10-item quiz. The comparison unlocks after two completers finish the full IPIP-50 and attachment assessment.

No. Gottman (and similar) measure the relationship — a relationship checkup. No. It is two full assessments placed side by side. There is no compatibility type and no percentage match. Do not use a personality test to decide whether you are compatible.
No. Each person starts with the quiz, then both need to finish the full IPIP-50 and attachment assessment. The comparison unlocks only after two completers. The free quiz does not score attachment and is not the full Big Five.
No. The free 10-item quiz does not score attachment. Attachment is measured in the full assessment only, as an overlay on the IPIP-50. Start at the quiz — that is the front door — then continue into the full test.
No. A comparison can name patterns. It does not treat a relationship, and it is not a diagnosis. If you need repair work, a qualified clinician or a relationship checkup is the right next step.
No. Two Big Five scores and two attachment patterns can explain a fight. They cannot greenlight or veto a relationship. Do not use a personality test — including this one, Gottman, or Enneagram — as a stay-or-leave verdict.
The Big Five test page is the scored path. The IPIP page explains the inventory. The attachment style test page explains the overlay. The neuroticism relationship post explains why that trait is often the loud one in a week. Then start the quiz.
