Enneagram vs Big Five — types vs continuous traits
Big Five scores how you tend to behave. Enneagram claims why. We run IPIP-50 — five continuous traits — not nine types.
People type Enneagram vs Big Five when they want one fact: which model is evidence-shaped, and which is a story you sit with.
Big Five answers how you tend to behave — five continuous traits, scored. Enneagram claims why — nine types about core motivation. Those are different jobs.
Deep Personality runs the IPIP-50 Big Five. We do not run Enneagram. We do not assign a type from one to nine. We do not map Enneagram types onto IPIP-50 scores.
If you want a scored trait profile, take a Big Five inventory. If you want a motivation story for introspection, Enneagram can still be that conversation. It is not a substitute for a trait score.
This page is the query-matching URL for that split. The spectrum-vs-types contrast at page length already lives at Big Five vs MBTI. The six-factor contrast is HEXACO vs Big Five.
How vs why
| Big Five (here: IPIP-50) | Enneagram | |
|---|---|---|
| Question | How you tend to behave | A claimed core motivation (“why”) |
| Result | Five continuous domain scores | One of nine types |
| Scale | Spectra with percentiles — most people sit in the middle | Categories (you are a type or you are not) |
| Empirical support | The trait model used throughout academic personality research, including Goldberg’s public-domain markers | Limited as a psychometric inventory; instruments vary |
| On this site | IPIP-50 after a ten-item teaser | Not offered |
A type is easy to remember. A percentile can move a little without renaming you. That is the same structural split as Big Five vs MBTI — a spectrum versus a cut — with a different typology on the type side.
What Enneagram is
Enneagram is a nine-type typology. People use it as a growth or motivation frame: a story about fear, desire, and how you protect yourself. Instruments vary. Some quizzes hand you a number. Some descriptions ask you to recognize yourself.
Academic personality psychology does not use nine types to describe trait structure. It scores continuous dimensions — the Big Five (also called OCEAN).
We will not invent a Deep Personality validity study of Enneagram, and we will not publish a house mapping from Type 1–9 onto Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, or Neuroticism. Those mappings are someone else’s product. They are not this inventory.
The honest use of Enneagram is introspection and conversation. Limited empirical support is the honest caveat. Fun still belongs there. A scored trait profile does not.
What Big Five is — here, IPIP-50
The Big Five measures five continuous traits:
You have a position on all five. Most people are not at either extreme. A percentile makes the middle visible. A type hides it.
Deep Personality’s full Big Five measure is the IPIP-50: fifty public-domain Goldberg items, ten per domain, five domain scores. It does not score six NEO-style facets independently. It does not assign a type. Details are on the IPIP page. We are not ipip.ori.org.
If the contrast you meant was six factors instead of five, that is HEXACO vs Big Five — Honesty-Humility as a sixth trait, still a spectrum, still not Enneagram.
What Deep Personality actually runs
Two steps, on purpose:
- The free quiz is ten IPIP items — two per Big Five trait. It is a teaser. It does not score attachment. It does not assign an Enneagram type.
- The full assessment is the IPIP-50 (fifty Goldberg items), then attachment style as an overlay, then an optional two-completer comparison.
You do not get:
- An Enneagram type (1–9)
- A mapping from Enneagram types onto Big Five scores
- A four-letter type
- Official MBTI
- HEXACO Honesty-Humility on this path
- IPIP-NEO-120 or IPIP-300
- A diagnosis
- An invented accuracy percentage
- An attachment result from the 10-question quiz
We use public-domain IPIP items. We are not ori.org. We do not diagnose.
After the teaser: attachment overlay and partner comparison
The unique data we actually have sits after the quiz:
- Attachment overlay on the IPIP-50 — anxiety and avoidance next to the five traits. Anxious attachment next to high neuroticism is not the same week as anxious attachment next to low extraversion.
- Partner comparison after two people finish — extraversion next to extraversion, neuroticism next to neuroticism, attachment next to attachment. Not a compatibility type. Not an Enneagram pair.
An Enneagram type cannot do that. Neither can a standalone typed quiz.

Who should stay on Enneagram
- You want a nine-type motivation story, and the label is the product
- You want introspection and conversation, not a percentile
- You already know the empirical support is limited and that is acceptable
Who should try this
- You want IPIP-50 domain scores from fifty Goldberg items
- You want a Big Five assessment for a scored trait profile, not nine types
- You want attachment scored after the teaser, in the same path
- You want a two-completer comparison, not an Enneagram pair

Big Five scores how you tend to behave: five continuous traits. Enneagram claims why: nine types about core motivation. Deep Personality runs the IPIP-50 Big Five — fifty public-domain Goldberg items, five domain scores. We do not run Enneagram and we do not map types onto those scores.
Enneagram is a nine-type typology. Instruments vary. Academic personality psychology scores continuous Big Five dimensions, including Goldberg’s public-domain markers, rather than assigning one of nine types. Empirical support for Enneagram as a psychometric inventory is limited. That is a measurement difference, not a Deep Personality study, and not an accuracy percentage. Introspection still belongs to a type story. Domain scores belong to a trait profile.
No. We do not run Enneagram, and we do not assign types 1–9. We do not invent type-to-trait mappings. The full assessment scores IPIP-50 domains, then attachment style. The free quiz is ten IPIP items — a teaser, not a type.
Take a Big Five assessment if you want evidence-shaped trait scores. Treat Enneagram as introspection only if you want a motivation story. On this site the Big Five path is a ten-item quiz, then the full IPIP-50 at the Big Five test page. We do not offer Enneagram.
IPIP-50: fifty public-domain Goldberg items, ten per Big Five domain, reported as domain scores. After that, an attachment overlay (anxiety and avoidance), then an optional side-by-side comparison after two completers. Not nine types. Not HEXACO Honesty-Humility. Not IPIP-NEO.
No. The quiz does not score attachment. Attachment is an overlay on the IPIP-50 in the full assessment. A two-completer comparison is available only after both people finish.
