Big Five vs Myers-Briggs — spectra vs types
People search “Myers-Briggs,” not only “MBTI.” Big Five is five continuous IPIP-50 scores. Myers-Briggs is a type. We do not assign a four-letter label.
People type Big Five vs Myers-Briggs when they want one fact: which model is a scored trait profile, and which is a type you can share.
As of 2026-09-10, this exact URL was a 404. Searchers say “Myers-Briggs.” The acronym page already lives at Big Five vs MBTI. This page is the query-matching URL. It does not replace that article. It does not 301 there.
Big Five places you on five continuous traits, scored. Myers-Briggs (the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, usually shortened to MBTI) sorts you with four dichotomies into 16 types. Those are different jobs.
Deep Personality runs the IPIP-50 Big Five. We do not assign a Myers-Briggs type. We are not official MBTI.
If you want a scored trait profile, take a Big Five inventory. If you want a memorable label, Myers-Briggs-style types will keep winning on shareability.
Spectra vs types
| Big Five (here: IPIP-50) | Myers-Briggs / MBTI | |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | Five continuous domain scores | A 16-type label from four dichotomies |
| Scale | Spectra with percentiles — most people sit in the middle | Categories (you are a type or you are not) |
| Dichotomies | None — Extraversion is a spectrum, not E-or-I | Extraversion/Introversion, Sensing/Intuition, Thinking/Feeling, Judging/Perceiving |
| Official MBTI? | No — we do not assign a type | The commercial Myers-Briggs Type Indicator |
| On this site | IPIP-50 after a ten-item teaser | Not offered |
A type is easy to remember. A percentile can move a little without renaming you. People near a cut can look like a different type on a retest without their underlying traits changing much. That is a measurement difference, not a Deep Personality study, and not an accuracy percentage.
The four MBTI dichotomies overlap everyday language used in Big Five — especially extraversion — but they are not the same instrument and they do not produce the same kind of result.
What Myers-Briggs is
Myers-Briggs is a commercial typology. Official MBTI is a paid instrument. The cut is the product: you are an INTJ or you are not.
Academic personality psychology does not use sixteen types to describe trait structure. It scores continuous dimensions — the Big Five (also called OCEAN).
We will not invent a Deep Personality validity study of Myers-Briggs, and we will not publish a house paper that “debunks” MBTI. The honest caveat is narrower: for a scored trait profile, use a Big Five inventory. Fun still belongs to a shareable type.
16Personalities is not official Myers-Briggs
16Personalities is an MBTI-style product. It returns a NERIS type label (four letters plus Assertive/Turbulent). It is Big-Five-inspired typing. It is not the official Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and it is not five IPIP-50 domain scores.
If the four-letter label is the thing you want to share, a typed product is the honest pick. This site is the scored-trait job.
What Big Five is — here, IPIP-50
The Big Five measures five continuous traits:
You have a position on all five. Most people are not at either extreme. A percentile makes the middle visible. A type hides it.
Deep Personality’s full Big Five measure is the IPIP-50: fifty public-domain Goldberg items, ten per domain, five domain scores. It does not score six NEO-style facets as separate numbers. It does not assign a type. Details are on the IPIP page. We are not ipip.ori.org.
If the contrast you meant was six factors instead of five, that is HEXACO vs Big Five — Honesty-Humility as a sixth trait, still a spectrum, still not Myers-Briggs.
Which is better than Myers-Briggs?
Better for a shareable identity: Myers-Briggs or an MBTI-style product such as 16Personalities. Four letters travel. A neuroticism percentile does not.
Better for a research-shaped trait score: Big Five. The public-domain IPIP items are widely used in research and teaching. “Better” here means closer to how trait psychology is actually scored, not a guaranteed life insight, and not a house accuracy claim.
Better than Myers-Briggs if you want a test rather than a type: a Big Five inventory. On this site that is a free quiz first, then the full IPIP-50.
The page-length version of this split is Big Five vs MBTI.
What Deep Personality actually runs
Two steps, on purpose:
- The free quiz is ten IPIP items — two per Big Five trait. It is a teaser. It does not score attachment. It does not assign a Myers-Briggs type.
- The full assessment is the IPIP-50 (fifty Goldberg items), then attachment style as an overlay, then an optional two-completer comparison.
You do not get:
- A Myers-Briggs / MBTI type
- A four-letter code
- Official MBTI
- A NERIS 16Personalities type
- IPIP-NEO-120 or IPIP-300
- A diagnosis
- An invented accuracy percentage
- An attachment result from the 10-question quiz
We use public-domain IPIP items. We are not ori.org. We do not diagnose.
After the teaser: attachment overlay and partner comparison
The unique data we actually have sits after the quiz:
- Attachment overlay on the IPIP-50 — anxiety and avoidance next to the five traits.
- Partner comparison after two people finish — extraversion next to extraversion, neuroticism next to neuroticism, attachment next to attachment. Not a compatibility type. Not a type-to-type story.
A Myers-Briggs type cannot do that. Neither can a standalone typed quiz.

Who should stay on Myers-Briggs
- You want a four-letter label, and the label is the product
- You want something easy to share, not a percentile
- You already know types can flip near a cutoff and that is acceptable
Who should try this
- You want IPIP-50 domain scores from fifty Goldberg items
- You want a Big Five assessment for a scored trait profile, not sixteen types
- You want attachment scored after the teaser, in the same path
- You want a two-completer comparison, not a type-to-type story

For a scored trait profile, Big Five. For a memorable social label, Myers-Briggs / MBTI-style types. “Better” means closer to how trait psychology is scored, not a guaranteed life insight. Myers-Briggs is a commercial typology. Academic trait psychology uses continuous models such as the Big Five, including public-domain IPIP inventories. Type cuts can make nearby scores look like different identities. That is a measurement difference, not a Deep Personality study, and not an accuracy percentage. Fun still belongs to a shareable type. Domain scores belong to a trait profile.
No. We do not assign a Myers-Briggs type, and we are not official MBTI. The full assessment scores IPIP-50 domains, then attachment style. A comparison is available only after two people finish. The free quiz is ten IPIP items — a teaser, not a type.

No. 16Personalities is MBTI-style typing (NERIS type labels), not the official Myers-Briggs instrument. See /vs/16personalities if you want that distinction in product terms. We do not assign NERIS types either.
IPIP-50: fifty public-domain Goldberg items, ten per Big Five domain, reported as domain scores. After that, an attachment overlay (anxiety and avoidance), then an optional side-by-side comparison after two completers. Not a Myers-Briggs type. Not official MBTI. Not IPIP-NEO.
No. The quiz does not score attachment. Attachment is an overlay on the IPIP-50 in the full assessment. A two-completer comparison is available only after both people finish.
